Texas law doesn’t require formal driver education for adults over 25. If you’re a first-time driver in this age group, the process for getting your learner’s permit or driver’s license is similar to that for ages 18-24, but without a required course. However, this option requires you to take the written exam at your local DPS office. Taking an online Texas Adult Driver’s Ed course is the easiest and quickest way to take and pass the DPS written test. You’ll get access to essential materials and can complete the DPS written exam online instead of at the DPS.
The TDLR (Texas Dept. of Licensing and Regulation) website provides step-by-step instructions for registering as a parent-taught driving instructor. You can check your eligibility to teach your student here. Once you are registered as the parent teacher, you can enroll your student with the driving school of your choice and begin instruction.
Students must be at least 14 years old to start the Texas Parent-Taught Driver’s Ed course. However, a learner’s permit will not be issued until the student is at least 15. Teens under 18 are required to complete an approved driver education course before obtaining a Texas provisional driver’s license.
For teen driver-education (age 14–17) or parent-taught driver education, you get a DE-964 Certificate of Completion once you complete the required classroom hours.
For adult driver-education (age 18–24), you get a ADE-1317 Certificate of Completion when you complete the course and pass the required written exam.
